Chapter 11
Somewhere around dawn, Vi asked, âWho telephoned earlier?â
It was the idlest of questions and Vi didnât really care. What she wanted was to see Rita, but Rita didnât want to see anyone. She was curled into her bed, with Ham refusing to let her go, holding her while she cried. The rest of them sat outside in the hallway and stared helplessly at the closed bedroom door.
âAh,â Victor cleared his throat. âOhâthe woman youâre working for, Jack. She was a little hysterical when I arrived, but I fear I ended the call.â
Jack didnât shift and he didnât answer follow-up questions, but Vi snorted. Jack would need to go to his next appointment with the woman on his own. She curled more deeply into Jackâs side, but he stood and pulled Vi up with him.
âItâs morning. We should sleep while they rest so we can help when theyâre ready to move.â
Vi didnât argue and didnât even realize she was still just staring at the closed door until Victor pressed a kiss to her temple. âIâll go check on Kate and the babies and head to bed.â
Violet thought to follow her brother, but instead, she watched as Jack hauled Denny to his feet, who in turn lifted the half-sleeping Lila and headed a few doors down to their bedroom. It was Beatrice who rose first, nudging Smith until he followed her away from Rita and Hamâs door.
âJackââ Vi shook her head. She didnât know what to say or do, but she didnât think she could sleep.
âI know, Vi,â he said gently and then sort of nudged her towards the bedroom. âYouâll be of more use to Rita if youâre not exhausted.â
Vi nodded and once in bed, curled into Jackâs side, tried to sleep. She didnât think it would be possible, but she was a bit like a wrung-out dishrag from the crying and long vigil. Vi found that the endless tears of the evening begged her eyes to close, and once she did, awareness slipped away.
She woke when Jack left the bed and she gasped, âIs Rita all right?â Only there was no answer. Jack had already left the room.
Vi rubbed her eyes, sat up, and then crossed to the doorway. She eyed Ham and Ritaâs closed door before turning to Jack, who was standing just outside their own door.
âWhat? What is happening?â Vi whispered, ensuring that her voice wouldnât carry through and potentially wake Rita or Ham.
âRitaâsââ Jack paused and then said, âas she was before. Iâm going to see Mrs. Meyers. Hargreaves said sheâs telephoned several times and had declared that itâs an emergency.â
âAn emergency?â Violetâs opinion was clear, and it wasnât something she cared about. She didnât care for whatever was happening to Jason Meyers.
âI finally talked to her, andâ¦â Jackâs gaze moved to the door. âItâll be better to have her stop telephoning, Vi.â
She nodded but was completely unconcerned about what he was going to do for Bertha Meyers. The woman was only someone that Vi helped out of curiosity and because she loved spending time with Jack.
